Taste of Ikaruga:Tatsuta Age Lunch & Sake or Matcha Latte Making

Fukokuen: A Japanese Café in Historic Ikaruga, Home to World Heritage Hōryūji
Fukokuen is a traditional-style café set in the gatehouse of the former residence of Baron Harufusa Kitabatake — a loyalist of the late Edo period and a judicial official in the Meiji era. The café offers a peaceful atmosphere in Ikaruga, where the World Heritage temple Hōryūji stands.

Details of the experience

Tatsuta-age, Ikaruga’s signature fried chicken dish, is said to be named after the Tatsuta River, which runs through the town. The dish is inspired by the deep crimson hues of the river’s autumn leaves.

The Tatsuta River is also celebrated in classical Japanese poetry. One of the most famous references appears in the Hyakunin Isshu, in a poem by Heian-period poet Ariwara no Narihira:

“Chihayaburu / Kamiyo mo kikazu / Tatsutagawa / Karakurenai ni / Mizu kukuru to wa”

(ちはやぶる 神代も聞かず 竜田川 からくれなゐに 水くくるとは)

“Even in the age of the mighty gods, such beauty was unknown—
That the Tatsuta River would bind its waters in vivid crimson.”
Alongside your lunch, enjoy a sake tasting experience featuring local brews from Nara — known as the birthplace of Japanese sake.

You'll be served three carefully selected varieties, chosen to match the season, from six distinguished sake breweries across the prefecture.

If you prefer not to drink alcohol, you can instead take part in a hands-on matcha latte experience, where you whisk your own matcha drink in traditional style.
